AWS Sustainability

Empower your sustainability strategy on AWS

Accelerate your sustainability goals with AWS

AWS is building a more sustainable cloud infrastructure to help customers achieve their sustainability goals while maintaining the security, performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency they expect. As part of Amazon's commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 through The Climate Pledge, AWS continually innovates to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact across our global infrastructure.

Why AWS Sustainability?

AWS relentlessly innovates its infrastructure design, build, and operations to make progress towards net-zero carbon by 2040 and being water positive by 2030.

AWS provides best practices and technical guidance to optimize workloads for carbon and cost reduction.

AWS provides solutions to help customers innovate to achieve their sustainability goals and unlock new revenue potential.

Sustainability across AWS

At AWS, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continue to make progress toward net-zero carbon by 2040, water positive by 2030, and reducing waste.

Transition to carbon-free energy

Amazon is investing in carbon-free energy to help power our operations and bring new sources of energy to the grid.

  • In 2024, Amazon signed 4 nuclear energy projects that will help power our data centers.
  • In Spain, we grew our renewable energy portfolio to a total of more than 90 projects.
  • In Europe, we added 46 new projects, including our first investment in Portugal to build the country’s largest wind farm, which is also the largest hydroelectric complex in the country.
  • In India, we grew our total investments to 53 projects, which can generate enough energy to power the equivalent of over 1.3 million Indian homes annually.
  • AWS works with energy regulators and policymakers to support Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs), advocating for hardware and software solutions to make existing power grids smarter and more resilient.

AWS progress towards water positive

AWS is committed to being water positive by 2030—being water positive means AWS will return more water to communities than we use in direct operations. As of the end of 2023, AWS is 41% of the way toward meeting this goal. AWS is innovating to lower water use across facilities by using cloud technologies to continually improve water efficiency and investing in projects that replenish water to communities and the environment.

Increasing circularity across our operations

With each stop on our roadmap, AWS will continue to maximize resource efficiency while minimizing waste. We are enhancing our circular economy strategy, which rests on three core pillars:

  • Design Better
  • Operate Longer
  • Recover More
